2nd OPERANDUM webinar: Assessing Nature-based Solutions to climate change

The concept of Nature-based Solutions is well recognized in the domain of disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation to address societal challenges such as risks posed by hydro-meteorological hazards. Climate change is likely to enhance the risks driven by extreme weather events such as flooding, coastal erosion and storm surges, increased nutrient and sediment loading, droughts, heat waves and landslides. Nature-based Solutions are often cost-effective, have multiple benefits and can become progressively flexible and resilient to keep pace with on-going urbanisation and the impacts of climate change.

At the same time, the execution of purely green approaches at the small-scale risk management level, may not be able to adequately address the scale of predicted future hydro-meteorological hazards.

Main challenges are about how to enable leveraging the potential of nature-based Solutions compared with traditional engineering (grey) approaches, which would likely accelerate and improve the implementation of Nature-based Solutions and make their uptake more efficient and effective.
